It seems, almost overnight, laser & IPL hair removal took the world by storm and it doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. If you have been considering laser or IPL hair removal, but aren’t sure what to expect, this blog is for you!
It might sound daunting, particularly the word ‘laser’ (is anyone else thinking of the sharks with lasers in Austin Powers?) so let us clarify for you what you can expect at your first laser or IPL hair removal treatment.
Before the treatment:
Before we even book you in for a laser or IPL hair removal treatment we will organise to have a one on one consultation with you. In this consultation, a trained laser & IPL hair removal therapist will look at your hair and skin type to determine the best treatment plan for you.
They will also make sure that you are in suitable health and aren’t taking certain medications that may interfere with a laser or IPL treatment.
Once they have taken you through all the information and ensured that laser or IPL hair removal is a safe treatment option for you, they will carry out a small patch test. This gives you an idea of what it will feel like, but most importantly it’s to ensure you don’t have any adverse reactions to the treatment.
Your journey to being hair free starts at least 24 hours after your patch test.
If you didn’t have any adverse reactions to the patch test, and if you have avoided recent sun exposure and certain medications then you’re good to go. These questions may seem repetitive but they are to guarantee your safety.
First, we will apply a clear gel, followed by the head of the machine. This combination ensures your skin is kept cool from the heat of the laser targeting your hairs.
The head of the laser or IPL device will be moved across your skin shooting short sharp bursts of light into your hair follicles, which ultimately destroys them. This will continue until the whole area has been treated.
Once the treatment has concluded we will apply BB Repair to the area which has been treated to cool and repair the skin. You may notice some redness or slight swelling after your treatment, this is completely normal as your hair follicle is reacting to the treatment, which is what we want!
It is recommended you avoid the sun after a laser or IPL hair removal treatment as your skin will be sensitive. You will notice as your hairs begin to grow back after the treatment they will fall out or ‘shed’, this is completely normal and shows the treatment is working.
