What the hell is IPL?

You may have heard these three letters around lately when permanent hair reduction is concerned. So we’ve taken the time to answer your questions, starting with…

What the hell is IPL?

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is technology that can perform a wide range of skin treatments. Unlike laser which has only a single wavelength of light, IPL is poly-chromatic. Sounds technical, but what it means is the settings of the IPL machine can be changed to suit a range of skin and hair colours through using multiple wavelengths.

So, if other laser services may not have worked for you, IPL could be the way!

Are there any side effects?

There are little to no side effects from IPL hair removal. Like waxing, you may experience temporary pinkness in the treated area, however, it should only last a matter of hours. You may experience tenderness or dry skin in the area treated for several days after your treatment, which is why we developed BB Repair to help rehydrate and relieve the treated skin.

The treated area will appear to shed hair over the next 3-4 weeks and there may be a short period of irregular hairlessness in the area until the conclusion of treatments, which is completely normal as you continue your IPL treatments.

Are all areas treatable?

Most areas are treatable, except for those close to the eyes, ears and nose. These areas are assessed on a case-by-case basis and our therapists can talk to you about this during your consultation.

Will my hair be permanently removed?

Most people experience no hair growth after 6-10 sessions. Having said that, the results of any laser hair removal depends on your skin and hair type, as well as hormonal, genetic and lifestyle factors. For those who do experience minor hair growth in the months following the end of their IPL treatment plan, we recommend booking in for maintenance appointments every 6-12 months.

If you would like to see if IPL is the right solution for you, you can book in for a free consultation online, or search for your nearest salon to chat to one of our experienced therapists.
