Have you ever sat down to think about how incredibly good bananas are for you? Neither had we. But then when we did we couldn’t believe the benefits! To start with they are low in calories, they have no fat, no sodium and no cholesterol. Not only that, but they contain vitamin C, potassium, fibre and vitamin B6. It almost sounds too good to be true!

But wait! It doesn’t stop there. They also combat depression, make you smarter, cure hangovers, relieve morning sickness, protect against kidney cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and blindness. They also cure the itch of a mozzie bite if you rub the skin on the area and they help shine shoes. Is there anything bananas can’t do?!

There are so many delicious ways to enjoy bananas, here are our top 3!

Banana and avocado smoothie:

Place all ingredients inside a blender. Blend on a high speed for half a minute until you reach a smooth consistency and then enjoy!

Banana Cake:

Step 1: Preheat oven to 180C fan-forced. Spray a 7cm deep, 10 x 20cm (base measurement) loaf pan with oil. Line base and sides with baking paper, extending 3 cm above rim.

Step 2: Sift flour into a large bowl. Stir in sugar. Make a well in the centre. Add butter, egg, vanilla, milk and banana. Stir until combined.

Step 3: Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 30 – 35 minutes or until a skewer inserted into centre comes out clean. Set aside in pan for 10 minutes to cool slightly. Enjoy!

Banana chocolate treat:

Spread 1 tablespoon of chocolate-hazelnut spread on 1 toasted crumpet; top with ½ banana, sliced and 2 tablespoons of shredded coconut.
